In our time, one of the strange things that’s happening is not unrelated to that. Having come out of a very visual age with organized points of view, positions, jobs, attitudes, we are suddenly confronted with an instantaneous-simultaneous world in which there are no familiar boundaries. Moving from the old hardware world of the nineteenth century and the industrial or First World technology - the First World technology of the familiar productive and industrial type - into a world of instant information and design and pattern is a flip from a visual world to an acoustic world. The main aspect of our simultaneous-instantaneous time is essentially acoustic, not visual, since no point-of-view is possible to the ear.
